On 18, October 2024, The Star reported that five men, including a Pakistani expert hacker, who is a mastermind due to his hacking skills, have been detained.
They have been detained concerning a syndicate that stole 400 million pieces of Malaysians’ personal data.
What happens?
The syndicate’s modus operandi is to run a portal that gives access to Malaysian personal data for a monthly fee of between RM200 and RM800.
The data was also sold directly to buyers for RM1.50 to RM2 for each piece.
With the first ever operation codenamed, Ops Kapas, which was launched on Sept. 5, it was enabled to nab four Malaysians and foreigners, aged between 34 and 52.
This is an example of a blackhat hacker who uses his skills for malicious purposes.
Our Advice to protect against Hackers
1) Use Strong Passwords: Create complex passwords with a mix of letters, numbers, and symbols. Avoid using easily guessable information like birthdays or common words.
2) Enable Two-Factor Authentication (2FA): Add an extra layer of security to your accounts by enabling 2FA. This requires a second form of verification, like a code sent to your phone.
3) Keep Software Updated: Regularly update your operating system, apps, and antivirus software to protect against known vulnerabilities.
4) Be Cautious with Emails: Avoid clicking links or downloading attachments from unknown or suspicious emails. Phishing scams are a common way hackers gain access.
5) Use a VPN: When using public Wi-Fi, use a Virtual Private Network (VPN) to encrypt your internet connection and protect your data from hackers.
6) Back Up Your Data: Regularly back up important files to an external drive or cloud storage to prevent data loss in case of an attack.
7) Monitor Accounts for Unusual Activity: Regularly check bank statements, social media, and email accounts for unauthorized access or suspicious activity.
