On 25 March 2024, the New Straits Times(NST) reported that the police intend to establish a new cyber technology section, with an emphasis on digital crime and more complicated technologies.
In the 217th Police Day Celebration, in his speech, Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Razarudin Husain mentioned that the tasks and responsibilities of the police are becoming increasingly challenging and complex with technological advancements such as Artificial Intelligence (AI) technology.
Therefore, to reinforce the service delivery system, the police must provide its departments with assets and equipment that keep up with the advancements in current policing technologies.
A member of the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) supported the decision of the police and said this development represented a critical infrastructure needed to effectively combat the growing complexity of cybercrime.
MCMC recently launched the Cybersecurity Center of Excellence facility which provides advanced cybersecurity training and saw police as one of the first persons to complete the training.
Any crime committed utilising a network facility or service was an area in which the MCMC would assist any law enforcement agency within its legal mission to control online damage and information security as allowed for by law.
Let’s hope the government will consider the police proposal to provide the best service for the public.
