Do you own a credit card? You might want to listen closely and be extra cautious from now onwards.
Technisanct, an India-based cybersecurity start-up, informed of a data breach involving 310,669 credit cards issued by notable banks in countries such as Malaysia, Singapore, Philippines, Indonesia, Thailand and Vietnam.
It was reported that Philippines’ credit card details were found the most in the dark web with 172,828 cards detected. Malaysian credit cards were jotted at 37,145 in total, placed second from the list. Indonesia followed suit with the third highest figure, amounting to 35,354 credit card details.
Thailand recorded the lowest blow, accounting to 16,908 credit accounts. While for Singapore and Vietnam, 25,290 and 23,144 of the cards were breached respectively.
The illegal collection was discovered by Technisanct’s risk analyst team while researching on Southeast Asia financial sector threats on the dark web.
The team has recorded over 1136 bank identification numbers, with discovered details on card numbers, name of card holder, CVV and card’s expiry date. For certain cases, PIN numbers were revealed too.
From their search, it was found that the dark web sells each card according to its remaining balance. The higher the remaining balance, the higher the price for the card.
“The results are alarming as no one’s aware of this huge volume of payment card details roaming around the public,” expressed Technisanct chief executive officer, Nandakishore Harikumar.
Harikumar reminded that this breach may cause financial loss to owners of the credit cards. On the other hand, card issuers and banks may face a damaged reputation too.
Technisanct has taken the steps into reporting this matter to the Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT).
CERT from Malaysia and Vietnam has taken necessary action to investigate the case concerning their respective countries, while Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS) continuously monitors for any cyberthreats and that may include payment card fraud within their region.
If you’re worried for your account or credit card being presented on the dark web, we would advise you to keep an eye for any irrelevant charges or traces of foreign transactions on your account. If such acts are happening, do alert your bank and cancel your card immediately.
