Security researchers who can find and verify android apps & chrome extensions misusing user data will be paid by Google. This is one of the company’s efforts to avoid misusage of user data without user consent like the Cambridge Analytic incident (where millions of Facebook profiles were scraped & used to identify undecided voters during the US presidential election in 2016.)

Google said that they will remove data-abusing apps or extensions from Google Play or Google Chrome Web Store and if the app developer were found to be abusing Gmail’s restricted scopes, their API access will also be removed.

A single report of data misuse could net $50,000 in bounties said Google. This bounty comes in the wake of DataSpii scandal which Chrome browser extensions scrape and share data from millions of users like tax returns data, patient data and travel itineraries.
